Payback: how many months the spend comes back
Break-even says how many sales cover one month. Payback asks when the leftover after that zero covers what you spent to start. Here the leftover is assumed flat every month. This is not a cash-flow model.
Six words that get mixed up
Margin is the share of the sale price left after the costs of that sale.
Markup is the add-on to purchase. A high markup can still be a thin margin.
Monthly profit is revenue minus variable, fixed and other costs. It is not cash in the bank.
Break-even is the volume where one month reaches zero. It does not repay the launch.
Payback is how many such months cover the startup spend, if the remainder repeats.
Demand is whether people search for it. The month count does not see that.
What goes in each row
- Investment: fit-out, equipment, first stock, a deposit — what does not repeat every month.
- Revenue and variable costs are for the same month, not “once it takes off”.
- Fixed: rent, salaries, accounting.
- Other monthly costs: tax if you did not put it in fixed, or a loan payment if you count it here.
- If the monthly remainder is not above zero, there is no payback period.

Worked example, not an industry: spend 2 400 000 ₸, revenue 1 000 000 ₸, variable 400 000 ₸, fixed 300 000 ₸, other 50 000 ₸. Monthly remainder 250 000 ₸. The mathematical point is 9.6 months. The first whole month that covers the spend is the 10th. This is not a café and not NPV.
When a search snapshot helps
- The period is calculated. What remains is whether people search for the offer in the chosen city.
What you learn
What we found
A period exists only after a monthly remainder.
Why it matters
Without a remainder, “it pays back in a year” is a slogan.
What to do
Split the month, get the period, check demand.
Limit
Not cash flow
Receivables, stock and a cash gap are invisible. Dividing spend by profit does not replace a receipts schedule.
Not a discount or a loan
No rate, no principal and no single tax for everyone.
Not demand
9.6 months in the example do not prove the revenue repeats ten times.
How many months the spend comes back
Monthly remainder = revenue − variable − fixed − other monthly costs. Payback = investment ÷ that remainder, if the remainder stays the same every month. This is not a cash-flow model.
Why not to ask a model to “price the niche payback”
A model will invent the spend and the revenue. Only rows you can defend with a contract, a price list and a purchase belong here.
If you do not want to check this by hand, aVtonomus will show it in the analysis.
Common questions
How is this different from break-even?
Break-even is the zero of one month. Payback is how many such months cover the startup spend.
Can I count a loan this way?
You can put the payment in other monthly costs. This calculator does not build principal, interest or a schedule.
Why round the period up?
The fraction is a point on a flat line. The spend is covered in the first whole month whose cumulative remainder catches it.
